Every now and then we use in DOCMA the term "Hopper Photo". Not everyone feels so good. Is it only about Photoshop users / inside, the word is probably quite accurate. But now we received the mail from a retoucher, who protested vehemently against this designation. Read the short mail exchange between George and Doc Baumann - and let us know how you keep it with the term "Hopper Photo".
Love DOCMA team,
Please ceases to call us retouchers or image editor "Photo Hopper". We are simply retouchers or image editors or postal operator. You call a carpenter but not Hammerer or Sawyer? A surgeon a Skalpeller?
This term "Photo Hopper" is just childish and annoying and reduces our profession on foolish manner on one of the tools.
Photoshop is "only" the tool and not the entire profession. The profession has not much experience, knowledge of printing technology, a good eye and even more things. More than just the tool ... Otherwise we read your magazine beautiful.
Doc Baumann's response
Thank you for your mail. On one hand I understand your discomfort so well - especially since we, for example, does not speak of Lightroomern and write. And as an author I would also make me reluctant to call Worder, or because I manage my search in a database, Exceller.
On the other hand, we did not invent the term in Google you can find almost one million hits to; or especially in Wiktionary, After all, he is the lowest common denominator of our readers / inside. (With the (self-) reference digital artist as I had with my understanding of art with many people but real problems).
A radiologist, for example, can even run more to handle than the rays at the time discovered by Konrad Roentgen, or to stay in our area, a graphic is from the Greek root simply a writer or artist and a photographer a light-signatory what most of the name of their activities would also be a little bit. Ministers are hardly as "servant" or "agents", just as engineers as "war Builder".
And finally, if you would describe yourself as a retoucher as someone who is a picture "again touched", it would indeed entirely correct from the etymology ago, but you would like so certainly feel not adequately appreciated.
In other words, job titles often have a strange etymological history, and the name as the central tool used is not the worst. As we all know - and I, as author of the "Iconic Criticism" especially - is the mastery of our profession far more to heart than the program functions of Photoshop. As unfortunately prove the image reviews over again, even some highly paid people in agencies or freelancers are not much more to be able - so professionally deal incapable of perspective, light and shadow, sharpness.
But again, I understand your discomfort with this concept still good and I use it myself only in exceptional cases. As I said, as a reasonable lowest common denominator of DOCMA reader / inside, actually to no more than refer to the use of the same tool by all. Why is indeed above also large Photoshop on the cover and the explanatory activities less underneath.
In any case, we should take your Communication as an opportunity to better reflect on the use of "Photo Hopper" before we use it, and in each case consider whether he is the most appropriate expression of what we mean, really.
Foodooschobbää and diggä Dingää
Hello Doc Baumann,
Thanks for the detailed answer. You have also quite right on all points.
I am also aware that the term was not set by you in the world. Only you have the magazine indeed some reconnaissance and role model. If you to cement the concept also help in addition to various YouTubers, then do not know more soon with the concept of Bildretuscheurs to do something.
Especially since the sound of this word, especially when spoken by a true-Barmbeker, sounds pretty cheap too so right.
Something like this: "Säch maa, you do bite too soon Footooschobbäär, Odae? Kann nich times my OLLn värpassn few diggä Dingää "😉 This Barmbeker says:" You've got such a program, because you have to nothing, push a button, and my wife looks in the picture like the Pamela Anderson best of times. "
I'm not mortally offended if you from the concept and used, but it sucks up a bit to be reduced to the possession of a Photoshop license.
Somehow namely many lay people believe the program could almost everything all by yourself ...
Thank you and best regards
Foodooschobbää - 😉
And how do you keep it as a photo Hopper with this word
Wonderful, all are right! George is right, and I also. This is good news and something unsatisfactory. A "proper" use of the term is, there is not - in one case it may be more or less appropriate in other non.
We read on the Web even provided jobs like these"To support our media production team we are looking for a committed Photo Hopper with experience in high-end image processing ..." or these"Freelancer I Looking For A Photo Hopper".
But how do you personally keep it with this name? Do you feel well marked (if you are self Photo Hopp ... uh, Photoshop users / in?) Or keep it rather with George, who usually find the word childish and annoying? We are excited!
